Mehrabad Airport, as one of the most important air terminals in the country, with the capacity to accommodate about 18 million passengers per year, continues to be the number one passenger terminal in the country even after the transfer of foreign flights to Imam Khomeini International Airport in 2007. This airport was built in 1938 and was considered the first modern airport in the country. The airport has 6 terminals that are responsible for welcoming and seeing off domestic, pilgrims, and ceremonial passengers. Also, grounded and unused aircraft are located in the area around the airport.

Given the growing demand for air travel, in the future, until Imam Khomeini Airport is ready to accept some long-distance domestic flights, there will be a need for quantitative development, and after transferring a number of domestic flights to the aforementioned airport, more opportunities will be available for qualitative development in Mehrabad. Therefore, the construction of a new 100,000 square meter airport terminal has been placed on the agenda of the National Airports Company.
